Chai originated in India and is known for its spiced flavor. The tea bag is actually quite simple. It’s just black tea with rich spices of ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and much more. The organic black tea and organic spice extracts used in this recipe are perfect for making a traditional chai latte.
The tea itself is rich in antioxidants, can boost heart health, improve digestion, has the potential to reduce inflammation, and more. Most chai tea will contain some caffeine—typically 30-35 mg of caffeine—because of the black tea. However, decaffeinated sugar-free chai options are also available for those looking to avoid caffeine entirely.
The Benefits of Oolong Tea
There is something about oolong tea that is just too good! It doesn’t hurt that there are so many benefits to go right along with it. My first exposure to oolong tea was discovering The Shrinker, which is a Trim Healthy Mama oolong drink that claims to rev the metabolism, burn fat, and increase caloric burn by up to 134 calories! Something that good I had to try myself.
That little drink did not disappoint, and it became my favorite drink to take to work over the next year. Although I can’t say my weight loss was due entirely to the oolong tea, I did lose a considerable amount of weight during that phase of my life.
Other benefits of oolong tea include reducing blood sugar levels, lowering inflammation, and improving overall metabolism.
Ingredients
- Hot water
- Oolong tea
- Black chai tea
- Collagen
- Caramel extract
- MCT oil
- Pure stevia (1/32 tsp)
See the recipe card for quantities.
You are also going to want to have pure stevia and pure collagen. I say pure here because it is very easy to get these items that are not pure.
You will want to sprinkle the collagen on top and then blend so it does not clump together. I personally love using immersion blenders for this type of drink, so I don't have to clean another blender on my Trim Healthy Mama journey!
Instructions
Creating sugar free chai that is Trim Healthy Mama friendly will be quite simple! The hardest part is going to be getting the ingredients for this sugar free chai!
Oolong Tea can be purchased from most health food stores, from Amazon, or better yet from Trim Healthy Mama. I actually recommend making sure that your oolong is pure as possible because the processing of the tea can vary significantly.
Seep the tea bags in a large cup with the hot water. Remove tea bags once the desired strength has been achieved.
Place all the ingredients except the collagen in the cup with the tea. Blend with an immersion blender or frother.
Sprinkle the collagen over the top. Blend well once more.
Enjoy hot.
Variations
Make your sugar-free chai even more unforgettable by customizing it with these optional ingredients. Each adds a unique twist to the flavor and texture of your chai:
- Vanilla Extract: Enhance sweetness naturally with organic vanilla extract for a smooth, creamy flavor.
- Black Pepper: Add a pinch to highlight the spice profile and bring out the boldness of the chai.
- Coconut Milk or Almond Milk: Create a richer, creamier chai with these dairy substitutes.
- Organic Rooibos Tea: Swap the black tea for rooibos for a decaffeinated twist packed with antioxidants.
- Star Anise: A single star adds a delightful licorice note to your chai.
- Other Natural Sweeteners: Try monk fruit, xylitol, or erythritol for additional sweetness without the sugar.
- Heat Milk: Instead of water, try heating equal parts milk for an ultra-creamy blend.
- Cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves: I love adding these to increase the spicy flavor!
Experiment with these ingredients to create a chai latte that's uniquely yours, whether you crave extra spice, creaminess, or sweetness!

FAQ
Does Chai Need Sugar?
Neither chai nor oolong tea needs sugar to taste good. There are so many alternatives to reap the benefits. Consider drinking it just with hot water. I love straight-up tea occasionally. You can also add stevia, monk fruit, or xylitol to create a sweet sugar-free chai and oolong tea that tastes like the coffee shop stuff!
Where Does Oolong Tea Originate From?
Oolong tea comes from China, specifically the Fujian province, where the terrain made it ideal for growing oolong tea. Another name for this unique tea is “Black Dragon” or my favorite, “Elixir to Prolonged Life.”
Can I Drink Oolong Tea Every Day?
The problem with drinking oolong or chai tea every day is usually not the tea itself. It’s the sugar and artificial flavors that so many people put in their fancy teas. A little sugar may not hurt, but a steady consumption of sugar completely makes the benefits a wash.
Does Oolong Burn Fat?
There are many studies to indicate that oolong tea can reeve the metabolism and subsequently burn fat. Just like a celery stick is said to burn more calories than it contains, oolong tea is similar. A study from China found that oolong tea promotes fat oxidation which makes it a metabolism-boosting substance. It is said that 1-2 bags of tea (depending on the quality) can burn up to 134 calories!
It also has powerful anti-inflammation that are specifically triggered by the antioxidants in oolong and what they trigger in our genes.
Other benefits include: reducing the risk of heart disease, lowering the risk of cancer, boosting energy, and promoting good skin and teeth.
